You cannot stop your carpet from becoming dirty. If it is placed on the floor, there is traffic, and there are kids and pets at home, it is sure to get dirty. You try your best to keep it clean with regular vacuuming, but after some time you will notice grime that cannot be removed by vacuuming. An in-depth carpet cleaning process is needed to remove stubborn grime and stains. It requires the use of a steam cleaner. If you do not have this machine or do not want to rent it, there are ways to clean the carpets by hand. Following tips will help you clean your carpets without using any machine.
Use the Carpet Brush to Agitate the Carpet
A simple carpet brush is sufficient to remove loose dust, soil and debris from the carpet. Do not be shy of going down on your knees to agitate the carpet. Once the carpet has been agitated, vacuum it to remove all dirt and debris that have been released. Use this cleaning method at least once a week to remove the dust and dirt lodged in the carpet. It will help keep your carpet clean.
Use Vinegar to Clean the Carpet
If you do not have or cannot arrange a carpet cleaning steam machine, hand cleaning the carpet using vinegar can be a good solution. You only need a scrub brush and white vinegar. Vinegar is effective in removing not only the dust and grime but also the slime and stains.
To start this process, fill a bucket with some warm water and mix a cup of white vinegar in it. Dip the scrub brush into this solution and then use this brush for scrubbing the carpet. Make sure the brush contains a sufficient amount of this cleaning solution but is not saturated with it.
After scrubbing the carpet with this solution, clean it with water. To do so, fill a bucket with some clean water. Now dip a terry towel or rug into this water. Ring the cloth to remove excess water but keep it wet. Now scrub the carpet with this clean and wet cloth. Once this scrubbing is complete, let the carpet dry thoroughly. You can use a floor fan to dry the carpet faster.
Using the Baking Soda to Clean the Carpets Manually
Baking soda is useful not only for preparing dishes but also for cleaning purposes. This inexpensive solution is environment-friendly. It will remove the stains and odors from your carpet. Use it to clean the carpet.
Just sprinkle the baking soda all over the floor generously. Put a good amount of it on the stains. Fill a spray bottle with warm water. Spray this water lightly all over the floor to mist the soda. Leave this wet mix on the floor for at least 3 hours. It will soak up the dirt, debris, and odors. Once the floor is dry, vacuum it to remove the dry baking soda and all other contaminants.
Cleaning the Area Rug by Hand
An area rug can become quite dirty. Such rugs are made with delicate materials that are difficult to clean using typical carpet cleaning methods. Use an inexpensive homemade cleaning agent that is free of the toxic chemicals.
First vacuum both sides of the rug to remove the loose dirt. Before using any DIY cleaning solution on your rug, you have to perform a color fastness test. Apply a small amount of this solution on a corner of your rug. If you do not see any discoloration of the treated area, you can go ahead and use this solution to clean your rug.
Dip a brush or sponge in the cleaning solution and use it to scrub your rug. Let the mixture remain on the rug fibers for a few minutes. Now use clean water to rinse the rug. Use a dry towel to remove the water from the wet rug. Move in the nap direction of the rug while removing excess water from it.
Dry both sides of the rug outside under the sun. Vacuum the dry rug to loosen its fibers that become compacted in the cleaning process. You can use hydrogen peroxide in your cleaning solution but be careful as this chemical can bleach the rug.
Cleaning the Stairs Carpet
The carpet used on the stairs becomes dirty quickly due to heavy foot traffic. Commercial carpet cleaning machines are not designed to clean each part of the stairs carpet separately. You have to clean this type of carpet by hand. You will need a carpet cleaning solution for this purpose. Use the following ingredients to prepare this solution.
Mix vinegar with hot water. Pour this mixture in a spray bottle. You can add salt or lavender oil to it. Cap the bottle and shake it well.
To remove dust, debris, and dirt from the stairs, first use a stiff bristles brush to scrub the stairs. Start at the top stair working down to the lower stairs. This brushing process will remove the stubborn dirt that cannot be removed by vacuuming. Once the dirt has been loosened, use a vacuum cleaner to remove all this debris. Once again, start from the top stair and work down to the lower stairs.
Now take the carpet cleaning solution you prepared and spray it on each stair. Scrub each stair using a scrub brush. It will ensure a deep cleaning of the stairs carpet. Once the carpet is dry, you can vacuum the stairs and remove all loose residues.
